Shine New Light On Your Bottom Line
Nucor Steel is a world-class producer of hot-rolled carbon steel products and is the largest metal recycler in the Western Hemisphere. Due to high lumens loss and premature failure, Nucor had to re-lamp every six months at a cost of approximately $38,000.
They wanted to replace their 500 Metal Halides with LED High Bays that matched the output of their 1000W Metal Halides and could withstand the 150°F ambient summer temperature.
We sent them a sample rated for 200,000 hours with a built-in thermo-couple that detects the temperature of LED modules and can dim the lights in extreme temperatures. They ordered 499 more to upgrade the entire plant.
With 7,313 – 3-tube, 32W fluorescent fixtures in 325,000 square feet of office space, the facilities manager was spending too much time putting filters over tubes to reduce the light for some and adding extra fixtures to increase the light for others.
Three issues needed attention:
1. High utility bills
2. High maintenance cost
3. Poor light quality with no way to control brightness
Light quality improved dramatically with the installation of LED troffers. Every fixture had a wireless dimmer to give each employee control over the brightness.
United Airlines contacted Watts Matter to consult with them regarding an upgrade to the lighting in all their hangars across the United States. Their objective was to improve the amount of light while reducing maintenance costs. We gathered all critical data and developed a proposal. The first hangar was 40,000 sq. ft. with 100 – 400w Metal Halide lights distributed evenly throughout. We sent sample 242w LED High Bays to their San Francisco Airport Operations Center. After a week of testing and employee feedback, the light was used to upgrade all their 400W Metal Halides.
Scheduled maintenance for the nuclear reactor building can only occur every two years. By the time the two years were up, virtually every light in the restricted area was burned out, making maintenance during the up-time difficult and sometimes dangerous. And the light quality from the mercury vapor lights was poor. Facility Director Steven Brown reached out to Watts Matter for help. Our survey determined that High Bays would solve their lighting problems.
We sent Steven a sample LED High Bay to install in his facility so he could “SEE” the difference. Within 30 minutes of the installation, Steven called us to rave about the quality and the amount of light our High Bay provided. But the best part of this project is that he enjoys considerably better light quality using 65% less electricity. The plant is now wholly upgraded with LED High Bays and has gone from a dimly lit plant with a greenish hue to one with bright natural light that will last without any maintenance for 20+ years. And they now have 5,752,385 more kWh every year to sell.
